Happy Christmas!

Merry Christmas!! Well, I am 45 mins late . . . guess Xmas came and went real fast. Didn't even realize the significance of it this year, perhaps because my loved one is kinda far away in another land.

Did you read this article on CNA online today?

=====================

Monday December 25, 10:17 PM

Thousands turn up to celebrate Christmas at Orchard Road

SINGAPORE : Thousands turned up at Orchard Road on Monday evening to celebrate "Christmas in Singapore."

The entire stretch was closed for 12 hours for celebrations which will last till 1am.

Organisers said $800,000 and 3,000 volunteers were needed to put the event together.
Many got up close to the seven specially designed Christmas floats which have been on display since mid-December.

"Singapore is one of the great Christmas cities of the world. We travelled quite a bit and this is just spectacular," exclaimed Suzanne Sald, an American residing in Singapore.

"It's the first time I'm in Singapore. It's really nice. It's a bit too warm but it's okay," says Jonathan Craven, a tourist from UK.

The parade attracted three million people as it kicked off at Orchard Road. Of that, 94,000 were tourists, according to the Singapore Tourism Board.

This year, organisers hope to hit the five million mark islandwide, since the floats have also been travelling all over Singapore during the festive period.

As day turned into dusk, the voices from 200 carolers rang through the entire Orchard Road.
Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean also took time out to join in the celebrations.

STB said 1 in 5 tourists surveyed last year chose to visit Singapore during the year-end festivities. And 22 percent were also repeat visitors during the Christmas season. - CNA /ls

===================

Doesn't the article sound a bit too 'propaganda-ish'?

First of all, the headline wrote "thousands" turned up and then in the article itself, it said "3 million", that's a bit misleading right? Maybe it meant the all the floats travelling to 3/4 of the island, and then somehow it meant that 3 millions people saw it?! I sure as hell didn't, guess I am part of that remaining 1 million unhappening folks.

And then, which part of the world does "Suzaane Sald" come from!? "Singapore is one of the great Christmas cities of the world"?? You're kidding me right? Has she been travelling to places like Papua New Guinea, Afgahnistan and Rwanda - and then somehow she's making the comparison? How can an island located at the equator be one of the great Xmas cities when we dont even experience snow?

And to top it off, STB said 1 in 5 tourists chose to visit Singapore during this period.

I wonder what did the other 4 say?

That they REALLY didn't want to come to Singapore and they unfortuantely ended up in Singapore on some unpredictably predictable rain/sunshine weather.

Anyway, it's just my 2 cents - be careful of what you read in the papers ... hv your own misintepretion and make your own judgement. Oh btw, this is not targetted at any media company in particular ... so dun come knocking on my doors. =)

Quick, quick! I can't wait to explore explore ...

New Favourite Place

Oh just managed to check out the whole Cannary @ Clarke Quay madhouse. I still think the boss of Lifebrandz went absolutely nuts to open up so many bars, restaurants & clubs in the same building. BUT I guess better than leaving it empty. Much reskpts indeed - all the venues are really impressive and very nicely done up.

The Clinic struck me the most because you get lost in the place instantly, lots of corners to hide, secret doors to open, rooms to explore, really unique concept. Not sure how many people have the patience to discover the place though. Unfortunately, the EXIT door malfunctioned tonight, so have to walk one big round. Oh well ...

The dance floor is not very impressive but the wall to ceiling LED light panels is indeed one of a kind on this island.

Additionally, realised that my 2 of my ex colleagues are now working in The Clinic as Operations Manager and the other one - the Floor Manager. Plus, also know the PR girl working there. Guess entry and table reservations are all sorted out now!

The Clinic - my new favourite hang out!

GCMA!

Managed to score close to front row seats to the Global Chinese Music Awards last Sat @ Indoor Stadium. Have been going to Indoor Stadium quite a few times over the last few months (last week was Lee-Hom!). It was a bit of Chinese music overkill for me but overall it was enjoyable. Not many times in life can see numerous celebrities so close. So anyway, this is kinda like a photo essay . . .

GCMA is a collaborative event between 7 top Chinese music stations in Asia to honour the best in the industry. So every country sent a representative MC (I think Singapore had 2). Everyone was literally having a go to try to rev up the crowd's noise level at the beginning of the event.

This was one of the random winners than came up to get his prize and say his few mins worth of thank-yous. I think he's from China, he's got a pretty cool shirt.

Rainie Yang, 22 year old cutie-pie who STILL hosts the 100% entertainment show in taiwan with jacky wu (and previously Ah ya).

I think this is Guo Mei Mei who startled my senses when she started her rendition of that irritating Russian techno song. Yeh, the bear was one of the dancers and a pretty good one at that, must be pretty difficult dancing in that outfit.

Malaysian singer, dunno what name.

Tank with Hebe of SHE. Not a very memorable song . . .

Ah Xing of MayDay. He's the main vocalistof the band, and prob the coolest too.

Our very own Tanya Chua - quite a blurry picture but nice pose la. She's clutching her award too!

SHE going on stage to claim one of their awards . . .

. . . and then going on to do one of their dance song items. Pretty well coordinated I must say.

Another song from S.H.E.

How can the event end without a ultra cool song item by heavenly king Andy Lau?

Wait, there's another one after he receives the most outstanding artist (male) award too!

Our favourite Stephanie Sun (who had close to 4 - 5 costume changes) was one of the last few to perform and did a rendition of 3 of her top hits.

All the artists were invited on stage for photo session and of course for the TV cameras as well. Kinda like class excursion picture, no?

Indeed, half the time, my view was blocked by irritating fans who held up their banners & neon signages!

Fans of China's superstar winner Li something-Chun. Looks like a lesbian, so didn't bother taking pictures of her.

Lightsticks on full action too!

Andy Lau's fans in full force!

And of course a beautifully made LED banner for TWINS (only Gillian came to the event.)

A Place You Won't Want to Stay Very Long

Taken from Matt Harding's blog, an interesting take on Singapore.

"The entire country feels like one very large departure lounge; spotlessly clean, no distinct smells, climate-controlled, no one is poor, lots of shopping, no real culture, pleasant enough for the moment, but not a place you want to stay very long.

This makes sense. The city was founded to be a gateway. It is between places, and somehow immune to the realities of true placehood. "

What do you think? I liked the bit about no culture. =P I guess that sums up my reasons for planning my discovery trip from next year onwards.

BTW, Matt is now an internet celebrity because of this video .... haha. It's truely inspiring watching it. Respects.

Azurri the Winners

What can I say, a match worth staying up for ... even managed to blag in some winnings on the full time 1-1 draw. And the icing on the cake is definitley the Italian win by penalties after extra time. The world witnessed an early 7th min debatable penalty, 19th min equalizer, handful of yellow cards and even a headbutt.

Kinda of a terrible way to settle the scores via penalties. Barthez didn't really have the chance to touch any of the balls, Henry + Vieira got replaced earlier on in the game and the best surpise came when Zidane got sent off by doing this. ...

Amazing he tried to pretend nothing happened in the 2 mins when the referee was trying to split up the 2 camps arguing ... not sure what caused this reaction though.

But respects to the Italian team - in particular Buffon (supposedly the best goalkeeper in the world) who makes goalkeeping look so easy; and Cannavaro for being the reliable sturdy stallion. I am sure many would agree with me that his role in defence has kept the team alive through the last 7 matches.

Now, to worry about trying to get up in time for work in a couple of hours ...
