Guangzhou Skyline (Among many others)

Guangzhou

Ok - maybe just one more picture for the hell of it. Managed to capture this shot from my room at Guangzhou Hotel.

Kinda like the contrast between the ol-skool & the nu-skool buildings. What you see at the old buildings looks very much like the aprtments from Shaolin Soccer, the movie.

China is rising up the economic ladder REALLY fast.

Zooming Ahead Chinese Styleee

Anyway, this is one of my favourite photos. Had the chance to take a train from Shenzhen from Guangzhou, and really - it was a good and clean experience. Nothing like the sorts you see in movies. It's air-conditioned, nice seats and has proper toilets. Maybe I was lukcy.

Clubbing in Guangzhou! Part 1

Finally managed to locate the new pictures from DJ Kai after 2 months: going to post them up for viewing pleasure.

I was booked to stay in Guangzhou Hotel - with a name like that, I was pretty excited to check it since it sounded quite grand to be associated with the city's name leh. But the rooms were kinda disappointing. Alas, the TV menu has also some real good Ching-lish going on too - providing Kai, Raji & me about ten mins of laughter. We were flipping through the hotel menus as well , trying to spot English mistakes.

"The Best, the hot movie is insides"
"Five star means the movie is given the topest attvaitive points"

What in the world is "attvaitive"??

"Complex of fear (say chinese)"

I think they really mean to say the movie is dubbed in Mandarin. Hilarious!

We were already right smack in the city, so we took a walk downstairs. I grew up watching TV programs that China had lots of bikes, so I die die had to take this picture - typical China, right??

But respects to the Chinese people in China, they're all very hardworking and always seem to be striving for the best. There were hundreds of these 'labourers'/ workers riding their goods all over the bridges and roads.

Night fell, it was time for Raji & Kai's gig at top club FEELNET. In Guangzhou, there are 2 main clubs who regularly host international DJs - Feelnet & Babyface. Babyface is kinda like the most successful chain of clubs in the WHOLE of China. They have about 8 branches in Shenzhen, Shanghai, Beijing and god knows where.

But Feelnet is massive. It's 3 storeys high, decked out in the latest light gadgetry (everyone say they copy Class Club in Shenzhen).

BTW, the Chinese people love to drink Chivas Green Tea at the clubs - it's the IN drink to be seen with now.

There's Raji in action behing the decks - delighting the chicks! Check out the LED lights behind him, it's 100% interactive, light changes colour in a different pattern. Nothing like that elsewhere in Asia!

She's actually one of the dancers for the night. No sleazy kinda dancing, but very sleek. Really dunno where they learn their moves from; and employing dancers in the norm in Chinese clubs.

Anyway, I've got more pictures but I've got to shrink them first. Flickr imposing a limit for uploading pictures la. That's why this is only Part 1 and you have to wait for Part 2.

Eats

This past weekend seemed to be filled with eats and eats.

Friday evening (after work) - a bunch of colleagues& me headed to Crystal Jade at Plaza Singapura for dinner; after which we ended up at Coffee Club at Rendevous Hotel (hope I'm spelling it right). 8 of us ended up sharing 3 sets of sinful fruity chocolatey fondue.

Khim Guan's cough didn't help much, so I avoided his dip. Yucks!

You can't imagine the mess Jeremy made.

So Saturday was kinda uneventful except towards night time when Joshua came over with Teck Lee. I was feeling the after effects of the fondue at my throat, hence I suggested porridge. Where else did we end up but the one at the corner of Chinatown market

It was kinda sucky though. We headed off to have a game of pool at Pool Junction (the one with progressive house), but decided to go to the sister 'lola' joint. This one Cafe Del Mar style. More high class, more expensive. Total for 2 hours came up to about $31.

There was even more lazing around the whole of today, till I got my ass to the city to get my hair cut. Feel quite cheated because it cost $33 bucks and it didn't even feel or look cut. The stylist merely styled my hair with more effort. Avoid Hair Profile (Basement, Far East Plaza), people. Think next time sure go back to JB to cut. Wondering what to eat and ended up having my favourite Ya Kun toast set.

I seriously think Milo and soft boiled eggs DO NOT work well for my stomach. = (

Anyway, I know it's kinda of a boring post, but heck - I think I'm getting to become a boring person, so be it la.

Ok ok , next time, try to avoid food posts ok??

Broadband Speed Test

Found a pretty interesting online tool to test out your current internet speed for downloading and uploading. Now you'll really know which is faster > Starhub's shared cable access vs SingNet dedicated ADSL access.

Click on the link and let it load for about a min.

ZoukOut 2005

Now that it's already being discussed on the Frontal forums, I guess it's cool to talk about it now!

Looks like a stunning line up!

Check it out ... not 100% confirmed but I guess worth a shot.

Armin Van Buuren
Carl Cox
Nick Warren
Martin Solveig
Louise Vega (MAW)
Jazzy Jeff
Chus&Ceballos
Peter Kruder
Stephane Pompougnac (Hotel Costes)

Local live bands: Electrico and Slowjaxx Does Dallas

I also heard that a big hip hop female artist will be headed down for a LIVE performance. Someone very close to the 3stripes.

No local DJS? I am sure the residents will be in the lineup as well.

Personally I'm keen on Carl Cox. Only once he has disappointed but he should be excellent for a open field atmosphere. Hopefully, the organizers will make it a point to reinforce the staging as he's going to bounce while he spins for sure.

Nick Warren will be cool as well for his progressive sounds. Armin ... well, will be GOD for the trance fans on that night. I am not complaining ... should be cool.

Which Are You?

Well, I am a Ipod Mini user, but today I finally got to hold the iPod Nano!
Nice, small and desirable. How does Apple manage to make a simple MP3 player so sexy, and Creative doesn't seem to get it right so far?

There's probably more than 5 things that the iPod isn't that great in, but we forgive the innocent device once the music plays, right?

Happy Birthday!

Have a great day ... as usual, must be working.

You're sorely missed, but due to circumstances, it had to come this way.

MC Day!

Well, after putting up the last post on Sunday, I went off to play basketball again - and in the process, landed on my ankle wrongly whilst jumping for the ball; and ended up spraining it. So I limped back, and hopefully it would be ok by Monday (yestersay).

However, things got worst and I decided to pay a visit to the doctors at Singapore Post Centre. However, the doctor dun even dare to touch it, Alamak! Anyway, he gave me 2 days of MC. Unfortunately, there was work to be done, and I ended up staying the whole of Monday. I also came down with a bad throat & a fever decided to join the fun as well.

BTW, do you know the difference between a sprained ankle and a twisted ankle?

I didn't know and asked the doctor. Whilst I was expecting him to point out the differences with a lecture, he told me flatly there isn't any. 'Twisted and sprained is same loh with a "dun-ask-me-too-difficult-question" look'

So, morning came and I headed off to the traditional sinseh a Chinatown. Many years ago, when I was having a recurrent shoulder and back problem, I came to this place religiously. After so many years, the place still remained the same and the couple running the shop didn't change a single bit and like still wearing the same clothes. I think they must be millionaires or something by now. A lot of ah po and ah gong do there to rub their leg, hands, back whatsoever everyday.

Ol skool la the place ... check out the furniture & signages!

It was over in mins since I was the 1st customer. I swore he tried to break my leg even further.

But right now, it DOES feel better already. I really should get a pair of proper basketball shoes with good ankle support.

Since I am already at Chinatown, might as well get some good breakfast right? So, me and Dad continued on the ol-skool adventure, deciding to go to Uncle Joe's for porridge.

The store is another one of those damn long time never eat places. I had been eating Uncle Joe's porridge and mee sua since I was 3 years old I think (anyhow pull out 1 number). Still tastes the same after all these years. Raw fishy still nice ... Amazing! I also dunno why I call him Uncle Joe (maybe it's my dad's old time friend or something like that).

Back in SG la

Batam was ALMOST fun. It was good to get out of the office environment for a few days.

I personally didn't think we achived much during the workshop other than eat and eat and eat. Even managed to squeeze in a few table tennis & pool sessions.

Oh, BTW, the place was Holiday Inn Batam, not Hilton as previously described. It was only 2 mins away from the ferry terminal, and I would not mind going back for the swimming pool. It's a not too bad get away.

Worst thing was on Friday night, my new K600i decided to go kaput, and now it can be turned on. I took a couple of pictures before that, and now that it can't be switched on, I can't upload any pictures to show and tell.

So for today (and since Friday night), I will remain uncontactable till I get my new set in the office tomorrow. Meanwhile, hopefully the guys at Sony Ericsson will be able to fix my HK bought set.

Otherwise, I have to send my set to Hong Kong or go back again for a holiday next month. =O

Batam!

Tired as hell, but still can blog.

Workshop's going to be tomorrow.
Gotta wake up at 6 am to share a cab to Harbour Front in time for 7 am Ferry to Batam.

We're going to stay at Hilton Batam - I really don't know if that's good or bad news.

Eh, hope the place looks better than this picture - anyway, any hours off from the office is always good I guess. Just that I have to run around clearing ads again, which kinda sucks.

Will be back Sat morning, so be good, people.

V3X

If you're a big fan of the Motorola V3, here's a preview of it's big brother - the V3X, 3G-enabled Motorola phone. Same cool key pad concept, 2.0 megapixel camera but thicker than the V3. I dun exactly see it flying off the shelf due to it's size but overall a pretty cool phone to have lah.

Of Trains, Crocos & DJs

I really dun know what's wrong with blogspot's picture uploading tool - sometimes it doesnt load, and then the next thing I know the spacing is all wrong. Simple "entering" on the keyboard doesnt seem to work.

Anyway, here's a selection of some of the pictures taken in Guangzhou in late July! Will post up somemore soon la.

SATAN Spelt Backwards

Went to WCG today to check out the Singapore Finals, but I was kinda lost in the whole she-bangs. Ended up at the NATAS Fair on Level 6 instead. Heard so much about this annual fair (in fact I am not sure it they told this twice a year or once?). Decided to check it out myself - it had throngs of people!

The whole set up like very cheapskate lah.

Then I saw Hard Rock Cafe Bali calling out to me. Check out the bloody swimming pool - it's heaven!! I wanna go!!

Europe, America, China - everywhere also got tours!

NSW - Sydney as well!

And of course, thousands were also signing up for Japan tours.

Hey ... wait! What're these people queuing for again? Free sushi??

Alamak! They's queueing up the check out the super VIP coach! I reckon it's the best best for going to KL. Luxurious!

These people sit on the seats lagi like really going KL like that.

Maybe I will try booking this bus the next time. No more puduraya! No more bus sekolah!

And of course, the India booth had to impress visitors with a temple like set up. But the yucky posters and brocheres all over the place spolit the look.

Winter holiday?? Soon I hope. Enough of sweating like a pig everytime go on holiday. Anyway, I didnt sign up for anything. Guess I am still at the stage of my life in which I prefer backpacking and self-discovery free and easy holidays. Dun like tours la.

Luscious Beauty

I just found out the prices for a Tiger Airways flight to Ho Chi Min and it's only $50 bucks more than a flight to Bangkok!

New Destination: Vietnam! Now to get the Lonely Planet. If I can have 5 days there, where should I go to?

iPod nano

In case you haven't already heard - I guess not - everyone's talking about it.

Just amazing how an announcement from Apple gets everyone so worked up - wonder why there isn't the same effect with Creative's announcements. I guess Creative's no way near that cult status brand yet.

Got to start saving money now - I want the black 4 GB version!

Jetstar!

Just had a sudden urge to plan my next holiday; seems 27th October - 31st October looks like a good period to get out of Singapore because of the Deepavali holiday. Hopefully they'll be no events to keep me here!

I was thinking of Bangkok (I have NEVER been to Bangkok before in my life); but actually I would like to go to somewhere with a cooler weather. Then again, I have some budget to stick with; otherwise I have to be eating bread for the rest of October till November.

I have already checked out the return flight prices between Air Asia, Jet Star & Tiger Airways. ValueAir cannot make it, can't even churn out the results for me. Anyway, the prices border around $190 - $210, so not much difference.

Maybe I will go for another holiday in December to that 'colder city'.

So, who wants to go with me to Bangkok??

========================================

PART 1

a lifetime:

Personal Discovery. The day I die, I would hopefully have discovered my true inner self.

5 years ago:

The year 2000? I think I was still in university. Copying turorials, sleeping through lectures; and dj-ing at the clubs.

1 year ago:

2004 was cool; I had a "happening" job got to know lots of people; however it was the same year I was laid off and had to go through 3 months of unemployment. Come to think of it, it was a great time to be in; and being able to sleep till 1 pm everyday!

yesterday:

I had a BBQ at my place which was kinda cool because for once, I was not the host of the party. Anyway, Roy the Birthday boy's always cool as hell; & I had nothing better to do anyway.

tomorrow:

I am going to have a terrible day with 2 meetings lined up before the Sales meeting at 3 pm.

5 snacks i enjoy:

1. Potato chips
2. Those pillow type crackers (incredible fun picking them out at Zouk Wine Bar)
3. M&Ms/ Smarties
4. All sorts of milk chocolate
5. Hershey's especially

5 songs i know the words to:

1. Sorry I fail at this section! I only know 4/4 beats la
2. F
3. F
4. F
5. F

5 things i would do with $100,000,000:

1. Fly my mom to Hong Kong, buy a mansionette on Victoria's Peak + maids + drivers etc plus give her $10,000 every month to shop. Shd be enought to shut her up & her constant nagging. = P

2. Buy over SPACE, PACHA & RENAISSANCE; I'll get free entry to literally ALL the clubs in the world.

3. Engage a damn good financial consultant & go into investing. Will never ever have to work again.

4. Move to London or Eastern Europe.

5. Buy a personal jet plane + ship.

5 locations i’d like to run away to:
1. Rotterdam (the coolness of Holland without the Amsterdam-mess)
2. London (cultural & fashion capital)
3. Rio De Janiero (beaches, babes + I wun see any other Asians!!)
4. Ibiza (The mecca of clublands. Been there already lah, but can go again, right?)
5. The sea (just drifting and drifting ... )

To be continued (I must do some work la!)

Thursday, September 1

Zapped

Seriously don't know how long this can last. The constant torture & living by the edge everday.

I currently have zero work life balance. My best friend is the PIE - I ride it at 9 am everday and then 11 pm, 14 hours later. Why should my youth be spent like this??

At the end of the road, I don't see a light either. It's demoralizing.
